The lenguage of new media / Manovich / Introducción




  • Computer: universal media machine, tool used not only for production, but also for storage.
  • Contexto social: triumph of consumerism, commercial culture, mega- corporations.
  • Computerization  of culture: leads to the emergence of new cultural forms, it redefines existing ones such as photography and cinema.
  • New media narratives can explore the new compositional and aesthetic possibilities offered by a computer database.
  • New media: modularity, automation, variability and transcoding.


  1. What is New Media: the digital mediumitself, its material and logical organization.
  2. The Interface: the human-computer interface; the operating system (OS).
  3. The Operations: software applications which run on top of the OS, their interfaces and typical operations.
  4. The Illusions: appearance, and the new logic of digital images created and accessed using software applications.
The Forms: the commonly used conventions for organizing a new media object as as a whole.
